Mo i Rana Port, in northern Norway, is home to one of Norway’s largest industrial terminals. It is the country’s second-largest port by vessel activity, handling coastal and feeder vessels to transfer container and bulk cargoes along a dedicated haul road. Despite harsh winters and heavy snowfall, Mo i Rana remains ice-free all year. The vessel berths are well-sheltered and benefit from a deep-water access channel.

Beckett Rankine studied the port operations and transports logistics as part of the Industripark’s significant expansion activities. We produced a detailed report with plans and concepts that provided recommendations for an efficient, cost-effective port strategy.

The expansion included constructing several new factories, and there was also the potential for increased penetration of existing loose cargoes into containers, making it necessary to consider and develop new plans for cargo handling and container logistics. 

Much of the area’s industrial focus is on manufacturing emission-free fuels, taking advantage of Norway’s low-cost renewable hydropower. Therefore, a key factor of the study was to consider how to encourage emission-free operations across the port’s activities, as well as introduce automation wherever possible.
