The State of Andhra Pradesh was developing more quickly than most other states in India. Because of this, the existing minor port at Krishnapatnam needed to be expanded to accommodate panamax coal carriers, principally for delivery of coal for power generation and iron ore which is exported from the hinterland.
Beckett Rankine undertook a detailed project report, and as part of the sponsoring organisation, was instrumental in preparing plans for a phased port development. Studies included breakwaters, berths and dredging works which needed to match increasing cargo volumes.
The design team worked closely with the port operator and construction contractors to put together this BOT port project. Cost effective co-ordination to meet the requirements of imports for the power plants was critical to the success of the project, as were onward logistics solutions for the bulk materials.
