A new Roll-on Roll-off freight ferry service between Southampton and the French terminal at Radicatel had been established to include overnight crossings and so save considerable driving time for the road trailers and containers that would use it. A new linkspan bridge and alterations to the pontoon were needed to service the new route.

Beckett Rankine managed the project as well as producing the terminal masterplans and the outline design of the new facilities and preparing the contract documents for the new linkspan bridge. This fast track project was completed on time and to budget.

The pontoon was made up of six fabricated pontoons plus a profiled end pontoon to suit single and double door ferries. Extra width on the pontoon facilities allows for truck manoeuvring for fast vessel loading. Standard bridging units were used to create the simple and robust shore link.
