To link in with the Mayor of London’s transport initiative to improve passenger transport services on the river Thames, the property developers St George South London were looking to expand the river transport network at their St George Wharf development by building a new passenger pier for the river boat service.

Beckett Rankine undertook a feasibility study for a pontoon to support the river bus service on the River Thames. We also designed a fixed bridge with a 45m canting brow and 30m long steel pontoon and organised all the necessary studies for obtaining planning permission and construction consents.

Location of the pier was determined to minimise the quantity of dredging while enabling access for vessels at all tidal levels. Archaeological remains from a bronze age bridge also had to be avoided and there could be no piling in close proximity to the Victoria Line underground tunnels.
