A study was required by the client to review initial proposals and make plans for construction of a new container terminal. The exact location of the site was to be determined, close to the Russian border. Advice was also required concerning the planned airport in Sonbong, which would be needed as part of the enabling works.
Beckett Rankine inspected the possible sites and gathered evidence to support the optimum location for the container terminal. Plans were then drawn up for a phased development of the port to accommodate increasing cargo volumes. Advice was also given about the size of the nearby airport.
The selected site is situated near the southern end of the proposed port expansion area. This is far from the main port activities, but it will enable the construction to proceed without interfering with navigation. Given fifteen years of expansion, this area will become integrated as part of the port.
