Cutty Sark Reopens

The project has taken longer than expected but nevertheless Beckett Rankine are delighted to have been part of Buro Happold’s team of engineers on the Cutty Sark conservation project. We, like many, thought that the ship was lost when she caught fire on 21 May 2007. That she has risen like a phoenix from the ashes is a testament to the determination of our client the Cutty Sark Trust and all the design and construction team.

Beckett Rankine’s role on the project has included assessment of the ship’s structural condition, advice on ship structures, analysis of 3D laser survey data, advice on reconstruction methodology, data collection on comparable ship preservation examples and preparation of 3D visualisations of the scheme. While we remain a little regretful that our alternative proposal to spend the budget on making her seaworthy and taking her sailing was not adopted there is no doubt that she now looks stunning – well worth a visit!
