Barking Riverside Pier wins at ICE London Awards 2024

Barking Riverside Pier has been recognised in the ICE London Awards 2024 as the ‘Best Infrastructure Project Award – Small’. The awards celebrate excellence within civil engineering and technical writing, alongside outstanding commitment.

Beckett Rankine Engineer Nathan Smith with the ICE Award

As project manager and supervisor under the NEC contract following our role as Principal Designers pre-construction, Beckett Rankine is proud to have delivered this high-quality, attractive and multi-purpose pier structure. Uber Boat by Thames Clippers now run regular services between Barking Riverside and Central London, improving transportation links for Barking Riverside’s occupants, and facilitating the introduction of their latest hybrid river bus vessels.

The pier’s innovative minimalist design has several sustainable features unique to the structure, alongside numerous subtle design lessons. It has regenerated the old and disused Barking power station coaling jetty, retrofitting it to serve modern needs. A 63m-long linkspan with step-free access and a floating pontoon make passenger access easier. The result is a new public space with excellent and accessible river views.

We are grateful to Anthony Carlile Architects, McLaughlin & Harvey, and Ravestein B.V for their collaboration in designing and constructing Barking Riverside Pier.
