Ridham Dock, located on The Swale on the River Medway, Kent, was built in 1913 and originally consisted of a concrete gravity wall structure founded on London Clay.
In the century since it was built, the site has had wall movements and even a number of serious failures.
Southbay Civil Engineering Ltd and Brett Aggregates commissioned Beckett Rankine to carry out a package of essential strengthening works. The programme was designed in three phases to ensure the bulk aggregate terminal can remain operational during construction.

The wall strengthening works involve installing two rows of sheet piles behind the historic dock wall, which restrain the existing wall via tie rods. The redundant crane rails were removed, and necessary repairs to the historic dock wall were identified.
The first phase of work strengthened 90m of the quay in 2024, with the remaining 140m of quay strengthening works commencing in 2025.
In addition to the strengthening works, a 30m x 18m heavy-load slab supported by reinforced concrete piles is being installed between the rows of sheet piles. This slab will enable the client to locally stockpile bulk material up to 7.5m high.
