Beckett Rankine has been contracted to provide Marine Advisory Services to Gas Sayago for their new LNG terminal in Montevideo Bay. This will be a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) and on installation it will be the world’s largest, with a storage capacity of 263,000m3.
Our role focuses on the navigational aspects associated with the project, including advice on implementing standards and procedures commonly used at LNG terminals internationally and options for the provision of towage.
The GNL del Plata terminal will lie 2.5km offshore in the River Plate, protected by its own 1.5 km breakwater and will become part of the Port of Montevideo. Gas will be taken ashore from the FSRU through a sub-sea pipeline. The maximum regasification capability will initially be 10 million m3 per day with further expansion possible.
The terminal will provide Uruguay with an additional source of clean energy with direct access to international markets, thus reducing dependency on neighbouring countries for energy requirements.
The navigation simulator at the local Naval Academy will be upgraded to suit the requirements of the project so that pilots and tug operators can undergo specialist training for LNG vessels without having to travel overseas.
The FSRU is scheduled to commence commercial operation of the initial phase in July 2015.
