UK Trade & Investment has launched its’ 2013 UK Ports Sector brochure showcasing the UK’s substantial expertise in all areas of port development and operation. The brochure highlights the pioneering role the UK has played in recent years in the transformation of the global ports industry, and how UK marine engineering, construction and other companies have led the way in the provision of world class port provision services across the globe.

As one of the UK’s leading maritime engineering companies, Beckett Rankine has been included for their proven history in delivering expertise in the planning, design and project management of ports in the UK and across the world.

To help secure a constant and diverse source of gas supply to the UK, a new LNG import terminal with an overall investment of £1 billion was developed by National Grid in the south east of the UK on the Isle of Grain.

Beckett Rankine was heavily involved on this project for several years through the various stages of development from a brownfield site into two fully operational berths and the planning facilities for re-loading LNG to smaller vessels for bunkering

The current development phase of Ras Laffan will ensure it remains the largest LNG export port in the world. Beckett Rankine was responsible for preparing a Masterplan for the entire port together with the design and preparation of technical aspects for the tender documents for construction. The project throughput of LNG is about 80 million tonnes per year as part of a total annual throughput of some 250 million tonnes. The terminal is the largest, by capacity, in Europe and has the capacity to receive and process up to 15 million tonnes of LNG a year equivalent to 20% of the UK gas demand.
