Avery Associates Architects have launched their stunning proposals for the redevelopment of Mayflower Park in Southampton. The scheme has been developed, with assistance from Beckett Rankine, in response to an invitation from the Southampton Heritage Foundation.
The scheme unlocks a difficult and divided site by relocating the Red Funnel ferry terminal to the west and thereby places Mayflower park in a pivotal position linking, for the first time, the city centre with its two public piers. This connection can be additionally strengthened in time by the sinking of the very busy Town Quay Road into an underpass.
The scheme has the derelict Royal Pier re-built and extended to include new retail, leisure, cultural and hotel uses and a new ‘Town Quay’ and ‘Round Pond’ that would be used by the Southampton Boatshow for its moorings as well as by the town for water-borne recreational activities and events.
