Sophie, Graduate Engineer

Why did you join BR? What did you do before?
I first heard about Beckett Rankine through the career’s advisors at university. At the time I wasn’t sure what sector of civil engineering I wanted to go into but had always had a fascination with the marine environment, which first sparked from being surround by numerous marine and maritime projects whilst growing up in Hong Kong. I decided to take a gap year and apply for a yearlong placement, and Beckett Rankine graciously excepted me. During the year I was able to work on a multitude of unique and exciting projects, improving my knowledge and confidence. I was also able to observe how keen Beckett Rankine are to encourage their engineers to be more independent and free thinking, as well as advocating for them to achieve chartership. It was this and the fact that the people of Beckett Rankine are some of the friendliest and welcoming people I’ve met, that I decided to rejoin Beckett Rankine as a graduate.

What is your favourite project you have worked on?
Although my project portfolio is still small, there were a number of projects I enjoyed working on during my placement. It is hard to choose just one, but I particularly enjoyed working on the restoration of an old harbour gate in the picturesque village of Charlestown. Going to site and witnessing how wild the wave climate can get in such a small harbour is something I’ll always remember. I also really enjoyed working on the design of a new berth in Freetown, Sierra Leone. It is one of the biggest international projects to be undertaken at Beckett Rankine, therefore the project allowed me to work with a big group of experienced engineers.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I have quite a few hobbies that I enjoy doing including knitting, crocheting, cross stitch and reading, amongst many others (I probably have too many!). I also enjoy playing video games on my Nintendo switch such as Mario Cart, Animal Crossing, Minecraft, and Disney Dreamlight Valley. I enjoy partaking in sports such as swimming and running too. I have particular interest in open water swimming, I have even swum the English Channel!
