Ports and harbours

Beckett Rankine has extensive experience with developing large and small port, terminal and harbour projects in many parts of the world.

Whether scoping and masterplanning a new multi-purpose facility, expanding an established port or maintaining a historic harbour, we navigate the complex needs of port and harbour owners to ensure high-quality results with minimal commercial disruption.

Freetown Port Expansion, Sierra Leone

Beckett Rankine oversaw the port expansion project from masterplan to construction. We successfully navigated a number of complexities that included Sierra Leone’s rainy season, a lack of geological data, and global politics affecting material supply.

Newhaven Port

Beckett Rankine has a long-standing relationship with Newhaven Port, primarily in the design and supervision of life-extending maintenance works for the busy cross-channel ferry port. Our work has included a Ro-Ro linkspan repair and replacement, a unique turning plate concept, and flood defence improvements.

a major development of Ras Laffan LNG port was needed to make it the largest manmade harbour in the world. The expansion was to involve 20 kilometres of breakwaters and 15 million cubic metres of dredging to accommodate more than 30 ship berths.

Beckett Rankine was responsible for preparing a Masterplan to cover the entirety of the construction of the port. This included selection of an appropriate site. Various hydrodynamic model studies were used to consider the waves, currents, and siltation as well as vessel simulation.

Beckett Rankine undertook a detailed study of the port and prepared a masterplan for its phased development. The masterplan study addressed a combination of operational, economic and engineering issues and prepared a framework for the expansion of the terminal.

Having undertaken the initial location studies and prepared the tender document, Beckett Rankine was appointed by Gujarat Maritime Board to review the design and to act as Project Management Consultant for the implementation of the works for passenger and RoRo ferry terminals.

The marine structures designed included approach causeways/trestles, linkspans, pontoons and berthing/mooring structures at each location with options to install wave screens. Both terminals required considerable capital dredging and regular maintenance dredging.

Misurata City has been the major trade and commerce hub for Libya for 3,000 years. Present day operations at the port were restricted by its size and facilities and an expansion was needed to cope with an increase in container trade. Beckett Rankine prepared the Masterplan for the expansion that would enable the port to berth super post Panamax ships, one of the largest container vessels in the world, and so become a hub for the Central Mediterranean.
