The Yamal Peninsula houses an enormous quantity of natural gas, which is considered to be the fuel of the future. However, the surrounding hostile environment makes it difficult to extract and transport the gas. As water around the peninsula is iced over for most of the year, any terminal design needed to take into account the present lack of infrastructure.

Beckett Rankine specified the site investigation for the planned marine terminal. Alternative schemes were developed for the efficient exportation of the natural gas, as well as liaising with shipping companies concerning the size and speed of loading of the vessels.

This mammoth project will see three different plants set up over the next three years. All in all they will export a total of 20 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas a year to all areas of the globe, making it one of the largest and busiest gas terminals in the world.
