Holyhead is situated on the island of Anglesey, almost the westernmost point of Wales. Its strategic location by the Irish Sea means that it is a popular port with ferry links to many destinations, particularly within the British Isles. A new route to Ireland was being considered by the ferry operator SeaCat.

Beckett Rankine created drawings and plans for expansion of the original marina at the port. Contractor selection was also carried out, with tender reports created to aid the client. It was intended that a ferry service between the ports of Holyhead and Dun Laoghaire was set up.

There are around 8,000 ferry movements each year at the port, as well as more than 500 calls per year involving much larger vessels. This makes it one of the busiest ferry ports in the United Kingdom. The harbour comprises of around 260 hectares and a 2.4 kilometre long breakwater.
