The Beckton Gasworks Riverside Regeneration project aims to transform the 30-acre brownfield site into a mixed-use development while reflecting its industrial heritage. The scheme includes extensive enabling and remediation works, flood defence improvements, and infrastructure upgrades.

Beckett Rankine undertook a site survey and specified a river wall investigation of the existing  river and flood defence walls. We carried out a detailed flood risk assessment for the proposed scheme, considering the flood defence strategy, including detailed flood breach analysis to guide the residential development constraints. Models of multiple breach scenarios were carried out to compare how the placement of the buildings affected water flow across the site.

We developed the outline flood defence strategy around proposals to reuse the existing river wall and open up the riverside for future site users, including the creation of a new park. The existing flood defence wall currently acts as a visual and physical barrier to the river. To resolve this, we
worked with the team to develop a flood defence bund that is incorporated into the wider landscaping scheme, whilst also raising the flood defence levels to satisfy the Thames Estuary 2100 requirements.
