A planned redevelopment alongside the River Roding in Barking intended to add residential buildings on piled foundations close to the river wall. The developer wanted to assess the condition and form of the 160m river frontage, to understand any issues the development may face as well as opportunities to include existing structures in the development scheme.

Meinhardt, on behalf of the developer, commissioned Beckett Rankine for our expert opinion on the feasibility of design options they were considering and for a structural assessment of the river wall.

We undertook land and vessel inspections to evaluate the river wall. We found it to be in generally fair to good condition, though the concrete capping had some localised areas of poor condition.

We produced detailed designs of a solution that would extend the river wall’s life to adhere to the Environmental Agency’s 100-year life span requirements. The developer could then proceed with the development scheme with the adequate consents and knowledge of how best to repair and maintain the river frontage.
