LRS own and operate Tower Pier under license from the Port of London Authority (PLA) on a Crown Estate lease. The upstream end is used for embarking and disembarking passengers and luggage from cruise ships berthed alongside HMS Belfast. When the cruise terminal is in operation, it is a restricted area under TRANSEC regulations.

Beckett Rankine designed modifications to extend the existing pontoon, with dredging to facilitate access by river craft to the berthing faces. We also project managed the fabrication, delivery and installation of the new pontoon and guide piles, including commissioning and handover.

The extension was designed for completion in time for the 2012 Olympic Games, so that the pier could accommodate longer vessels and cater for the increased ferry services to and from Tower Pier during the games. It also reduced congestion on the Thames from vessels waiting for a berth space.
