Gemma, Principal Geotechnical Engineer

Why did you join BR?
I previously worked as a geotechnical engineer focusing on built environment developments in London and the Middle East, where I came across Beckett Rankine. I was drawn by both the variety of projects and technical challenges that the marine environment presents – there is no “one-solution-fits-all” approach. The size of the company and friendliness of team members was also a big appeal to me, as I enjoy the responsibilities that working with small teams can bring.

What is your favourite project worked on?
My favourite project so far has been working on the Freetown berth extension. This has been an incredibly rewarding project to work on as it a technically challenging scheme, requiring problem solving and teamwork to develop unique engineering solutions. I have also had the opportunity to travel to Sierra Leone to supervise construction work, seeing our design drawings and team efforts come into fruition.

What are your future aspirations?
I aim to develop geotechnical engineering skills within the Beckett Rankine team, enabling us to work on a wider variety of interesting projects. I would like to progress my personal knowledge and experience of working in the marine environment, continuing to build on our global resume in the process!
