There was great excitement in Alderney on Monday when the 90m long cruise ship ‘Island Sky’ berthed alongside the new Commercial Quay. She is the largest ship ever to berth in Braye Harbour and is significantly larger than the design vessel when the refurbishment project was originally conceived. The quay is now accommodating a substantial increase in the size and number of vessels serving Alderney. In fact this month has seen a peak in activity with the general cargo vessels ‘Isis’ and ‘Huelin Endeavour’ as well as the bulk fuel tanker ‘Sarnia Cherie’ all berthing at the quay on 17 May. By enabling larger ships to berth the redevelopment of Commercial Quay has not only resulted in a reduction in freight shipping costs but has also opened up a new cruise market opportunity for the islanders.
