A new coal fired power plant was planned at Meghavaram in northern Andhra Pradesh, 10 km south of Bhavanapadu port, for import of coal and blended fuels coming both from overseas and coastal India. The selected site was remote from all developed ports, so a captive jetty was needed for panamax coal carriers to offload.

Beckett Rankine prepared a detailed project report for the new captive jetty. Site surveys were carried out to identify the seabed levels and ground conditions where the jetty was to be constructed. Mathematical model studies were also undertaken to identify likely wave heights and other marine parameters.

Due to its location, an exposed jetty would have suffered significant amounts of downtime leading to disrupted coal supplies and meant a large stockyard having to be built at the plant. The introduction of a breakwater to create a captive jetty reduced this disruption considerably.
